The phrase "model order reduction" (MOR) refers to a class of techniques which approximate high-dimensional models with computationally efficient low-dimensional surrogates. In the first part of this talk we discuss the types of problems or applications in which MOR is used, and present an overview of some of the most commonly used MOR techniques. In the second part of the talk, we focus on one particular technique --- the reduced basis (RB) method. We present an introduction to the RB method, focusing on the aspects which distinguish it from other techniques and which have contributed to the rise in its popularity in the last few years. Finally, in the third and last part of the talk, we briefly discuss some of the recent developments in the RB method, particularly in AICES.
