New AICES Junior Professor
AICES announces with great pleasure the start of a new young research group leader: Dr. David Bommes
David Bommes studied Computer Science with applications in Physics at RWTH Aachen University. During his Ph.D. at Aachen’s Computer Graphics Group, where he was supervised by Prof. Dr. Leif Kobbelt, he investigated various geometry processing tasks with a focus on quadrilateral mesh generation. Due to its strong theoretical contribution and its practical impact, David Bommes’s thesis about “Quadrilateral Surface Mesh Generation for Animation and Simulation” was selected for a Best Ph.D. thesis award by the European Association for Computer Graphics in 2013. Subsequently he joined the TITANE team of the French Inria research center located in Sophia Antipolis, initially as a postdoctoral fellow in the ERC IRON project and later on as a permanent Inria researcher. In July 2014 David Bommes has been appointed to a Junior Professorship at the AICES Graduate School.
His research interests are located in the steadily growing area of 3D geometry processing with a focus on mesh generation, e.g. for simulation based on the finite element method, and its foundations including differential geometry and numerical optimization.
Welcome in AICES, David!
