CAMMP Week 2020 - This Year Digital

In the past years, the CAMMP WEEK has been held as an on-site event. For one week the students researched in groups together  and presented their results to an audience in the SuperC on the last day of the CAMMP Week. Due to the current Corona Pandemic, an on-site event was unfortunately not possible. However, it was important for all participants to find a way to let the event take place this year as well. It was therefore decided to hold the CAMMP WEEK digitally for the first time this year. We are very pleased that this could actually be realized! After intensive preparation we were able to offer the students an exciting week with very interesting problems.

CAMMP WEEK is aimed at upper school students who spend a week in small groups researching real problems from current research in companies and university institutes. They are supported by teachers and scientists from the RWTH Aachen University. To solve the problems, the students use mathematical methods, computer simulations and, of course, their own creative ideas. At the end of the week there is a final event. Here the students meet the company and university representatives, present their results and have the opportunity to exchange ideas.

The digital event took place from September 27 to October 2 with a total of 25 students from the Aachen and Karlsruhe regions. After an introductory lecture into the world of mathematical modeling by Prof. Martin Frank of KIT and the presentation of the different problems, each of the six groups had five days to work on a solution. For this purpose, different communication platforms and programming languages were used. Among the problems were:

  • Optimal loading strategy (INFORM GmbH)
  • Detection of heavy metal contents in environmental samples by neutron activation (AiNT GmbH)
  • Optimization of wind farms (Vattenfall GmbH)
  • Trip planning of heliostats in a solar tower power plant (DLR - German Aerospace Center)
  • Is climate change man-made?
  • Automatic recognition of initials in letterpresses (both from the Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC) of KIT)

During the problem solving process, the students were always supervised by a scientist. The teams of students presented their results to company representatives at the end of the week at a final event, which also took place digitally. In addition, a supporting program with small games as well as events for study information could be offered digitally during the week.

The first digital CAMMP WEEK 2020 was a complete success. We would like to thank all participants, teachers, scientists and all those who were involved in the organization of the event in the background.
