Prof. Dr. Ruth Misener - Stem Cell Bioprocessing under Uncertainty: A Case Study in Optimising Red Blood Cell Production

As the cellular therapy industry matures towards reliable, commercialisable applications, effective stem cell biomanufacturing requires developing principles for bioprocess design and operation. We propose a rigorous computational framework facilitating stem cell bioreactor design and operation under uncertainty; our tool kit incorporates: high-fidelity modelling; covariance-based sensitivity analysis; topological superstructure optimisation; robust optimisation. We quantitatively demonstrate the advantages of the proposed bioprocess optimisation framework using, as a case study, a dual hollow fibre bioreactor producing red blood cells from stem cell progenitors.
