Prof. Dr. Tröltzsch - Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations - Some Main Techniques and Applications

The lecture introduces in some main ideas for solving optimal control problems for nonlinear partial differential equations. As foundation for numerical methods, necessary optimality conditions are motivated and explained. In particular adjoint equations and optimality systems are introduced. Important numerical methods for solving optimal control problems with partial differential equations are discussed. Applications of optimal control in cooling steel, to semiconductor crystal growth, flow around airfoils, flow measurement by alternating magnetic fields, and to the control of wave fronts for reaction diffusion equations illustrate the theory.
