Prof. Preziosi, Ph.D. - Mathematical Models of Tumor Growth

The lectures will give an overview of several mathematical frameworks (individual cell-based models, reaction-diffusion models, continuum mechanics models) used to describe tumour evolution in the different phases of growth, from avascular growth to vascular growth through the formation of vascular networks, to end with the detachment of metastasis and the invasion of the surrounding tissues. To enter more in detail we will start from the first models developed to describe avascular growth to introduce then the more recent multiphase model. We will then describe the mechanical aspects related to tumour growth and cell migration. We will conclude with some continuous and discrete models to describe the process of formation of vascular networks, through vasculogenesis and angiogenesis.
