This course will present an introduction to the mathematical theory of stability and bifurcation in the context of materials problems. Basic concepts of bifurcation and stability are covered based primarily on the minimum potential energy criterion for investigating the stability of elastic conservative systems. An introduction to numerical methods for continuation (branch-following) and branch switching will be discussed and their application to martensitic phase transformations in periodic crystalline alloys will be reviewed.
